History, remembering and family.

We slept in (such a novelty for us) and then went for a walk around Leopoldsburg. Such a pretty place. We had a coffee, getting used to putting the cream in our coffee and having a chocolate or in some places a donut filled with chocolate - yum!

We wandered around and found the Catholic Church that was in the town. We thought why not let's go in.........one huge solid wooden door led to another huge wooden door and then we went inside. They were setting up for Church and lighting gas heaters to warm up the Church. It was beautiful, older than Australia, lovely lead light windows and old wood tables. Wonderful.

Then we walked down the road and found a War Cemetery and a path beside it into the forest. It was beautiful, I found leaves to throw and kick and the colours of the trees was magnificent. We found chestnuts all over the ground and had a wonderful walk. Time to turn back and we walked past another War Cemetery, old homes and beautiful gardens.

Time to go to Martine's for lunch. Lunch was all sorts of beautiful cheeses, breads and olives. I was in cheese heaven.........so many flavours and tastes.

We then went for a walk and Martine showed us some of the history of Leopoldsburg. Leopoldsburg is a military town with the biggest army base in Belgium also an air base as well. We saw a lane way where the wives, daughters, girlfriends and mothers would say goodbye to their loved ones prior to going to war. Then we went to the War Cemeteries. One was for just Belgiums who died in World War 1 and the other was for World War 2. In the second one there are 8 Australians and we found 2 graves. One of them the man was only 22, so far away from home. lest we forget.

On the way back to Martine's before we went for dinner we visited Eddie. Eddie has magnificently restored old tanks and cars and other memorabilia from World War 2. An amazing collection by an amazing man.

Our final meal in Belgium was with Martine, her two adorable sons and her sister and family. It was a wonderful time, filled with love and happiness. Family sharing a meal together is a wonderful thing and we decided that you should never be too busy for family and sharing a meal with family and friends.

Off to Paris in the morning. Thank you Belgium - we had the most wonderful time.
